ASD Essentials for Australian SMEs: Moving from Cyber Awareness to Action

Cyber security advice is becoming more practical for Australian small and medium businesses. The Australian Signals Directorate has introduced ASD Essentials as a threat-informed way to strengthen cyber resilience across modern technology environments.

Move from awareness to repeatable action

Awareness matters, but it does not protect a business unless it changes daily work. A small business should know which systems matter most, who can access them, how recovery works and what happens when a control fails.

Seven checks to put into practice

  1. Map the essentials. List email, websites, cloud storage, accounting, CRM, point-of-sale and operational devices.
  2. Protect identities. Use strong multi-factor authentication, separate admin accounts and prompt staff offboarding.
  3. Control devices. Keep operating systems, browsers, applications, routers and business equipment updated.
  4. Reduce exposure. Remove unused accounts, services, remote access paths and public-facing tools.
  5. Back up for recovery. Keep protected backups and test restoring a real file or system, not only the backup report.
  6. Prepare people. Give staff a simple way to report suspicious messages, unusual payments or unexpected access.
  7. Test the response. Record who investigates, who contacts suppliers and how the business continues if systems are unavailable.

Start with one business-critical workflow

Choose one workflow this week, such as email, customer records or invoicing. Write down its owner, data, access, backup, update and recovery steps. Then review the result with the team and fix the highest-risk gap first.

Cyber resilience is not a one-off checklist. It is a practical operating habit that helps a business keep working when technology, people or suppliers do not behave as expected.
