Connected machinery can improve precision, repeatability and production visibility, but it also creates new business systems that need to be protected. A CNC machine is no longer only a piece of equipment when it connects to software, cameras, suppliers or cloud services.
Map the connected production environment
Keep an inventory of CNC machines, controllers, cameras, sensors, edge computers, software accounts and supplier connections. Record what each system does, where it connects and who is responsible for it.
Separate production from office systems
Where practical, keep production equipment and machine-vision systems separate from finance, office and guest networks. Review remote support paths, disable unused services and monitor unusual connections.
Protect designs and machine programs
Design files, CNC programs, calibration data and production records can be commercially sensitive. Use named access, strong authentication, controlled sharing and tested backups. Remove permissions when staff or suppliers no longer need them.
Control changes to machines and digital twins
A change to a machine program, sensor configuration or digital model can affect quality, safety and delivery. Record approvals, test changes before production and keep a known-good recovery version.
Plan for a disconnected operation
Document how the team will pause work safely, access essential instructions and restore production if the network, controller or cloud platform is unavailable. Test the plan with the people who operate the equipment.
