Cyber Health Check: A Practical Starting Point for Australian SMEs

Cyber security can feel like a large project when a business is already busy. A better starting point is a short health check that shows what is working, where the gaps are and which action should happen first.

Start with a baseline

The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Cyber Health Check Tool is free, anonymous and designed to take less than five minutes. It is intended for individuals, small businesses and not-for-profits that want practical direction rather than a long technical report. Use the result as a conversation starter, not as proof that every risk has been removed.

Check the systems that matter

Make a simple list of the systems your business depends on: email, websites, cloud storage, accounting, CRM, payment terminals, Wi-Fi, phones and supplier portals. For each one, identify the owner, the data it holds, who has administrator access and how the business would recover if the account or device was unavailable.

Fix the first three gaps

  • Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, finance, administrator and remote-access accounts.
  • Confirm that important devices, software and websites receive updates.
  • Check that backups exist, are protected from ordinary administrator access and have been tested.

Make the result useful

Give every action an owner and a due date. Start with controls that reduce common risks without disrupting customers or staff. Review old user accounts, shared passwords, exposed enquiry forms, unused software and supplier access. Then repeat the check after the first improvements so progress is visible.

A cyber health check is most valuable when it becomes a small business habit. It gives owners a clear first step, helps teams discuss technology in plain English and creates a practical path toward stronger protection of systems, data and customers.
